What is Truffle Butter

What Is Truffle Butter

Here’s some Truffle Butter

This time around I’m diving into some food. Not just any old food either. I’m talking about a delicious combination of a common food and a not so common food. When these two are combined, the result is a creamy, earthy, fragrant mix know as truffle butter. If you want to know what is truffle butter, keep reading.

I know this falls under a subject that I am no expert on, to say the least. However, I learned a lot as I researched this topic. I am a big fine a great food and I was curious which is why I decided to write about this. If you want to find out more about things like this, go check out the Home and Garden section. Yes, Things Men Buy has a section with that name.

So, What is Truffle Butter?

Truffle butter is known as a compound butter because it is a mixture of butter and something else. In this case, the something else is truffles, which I know you figured out by the name. A compound butter such as truffle butter has numerous uses. Using this mixture can enhance dishes and even take them to heretofore unknown flavor heights. Or, if you prefer, you can keep in simple and just spread it on your cracker or bread of choice.

For those of you not familiar with truffles, they belong to the fungus family. Truffles, themselves, are coveted by gourmets around the world. Their flavor is kind of hard to pin down. They taste kind of garlicky, kind of oniony and are kind of meaty and quite pungent.

Hunting Truffles with a Pig

Yes, they actually use pigs to hunt for truffles.

Seriously, A Truffle Pig

Interesting about truffles is that you don’t grow them. They are hunted. Ever hear of a truffle pig? Sound crazy but there are highly trained pigs that are used to find truffles. Well trained dogs are used also. Once found, they must be handled with great care. This finding, harvesting, and handling of truffles all add to their expense. Truffles are not cheap.

How Is Truffle Butter Made?

black truffles

These are actually truffles.

A high-quality creamery butter is used as your base. To this is added a number of small pieces of the truffles. Usually, black summer truffles are used in the preparation of truffle butter. The bits of truffles are added and then the mixture is blended. White truffles are sometimes used too. Be sure to look at your truffle butter before you buy it. You want the kind made with fresh truffles.

Occasionally, truffle oil is used instead of actual truffles. That truffle oil might be synthetic. You want to be able to see those little bits of truffle in the butter. That will provide the best flavoring.

What Do You Do With It?

As mentioned earlier, you can simply use truffle butter as a spread. Nothing wrong with that, but if that’s the only thing you do with it you’ll be missing out.

Think sauces, think adding it to potato dishes, add it to omelets, top your steak with it, put it under the skin of turkey or chicken as a poultry baste. Add it to your pasta, to polenta, to risotto. Use it like butter, but remember that because of its strong flavor a little goes a long way. It is quite savory.

Now that you know what truffle butter is and the many uses of it, why not splurge a bit and give it a try.
