EMTs: What To Look For When Choosing an Employer

It’s a good time to be an EMT, or to be considering entering the profession. Studies show that demand for EMTs is higher than ever, and not only that, but it’s also expected to grow significantly in the next few years.

That puts EMTs in a strong position to avoid the reality of workers in many other industries, who often have to take the first job they’re offered, and instead actively be selective about the employer they choose to work for.

Choosing the right EMT employer will ultimately set you up for long-term success in the field, since, as we’ll see below, they will provide essentially everything you need to be the best that you can be. Here are the questions you can ask that should push the right employer in your direction.

Choosing an Employer

Do They Provide a Supportive Environment?

The best EMT employers recognize that employees can thrive when they have the right support. This stretches far beyond ensuring that their EMTs have the tools, resources, and equipment they need to work well. The company’s culture should be inclusive, family-like, and even fun.

Ultimately, the best employers recognize that being an EMT is challenging and do everything they can to make the task not only easier, but, when possible, actually enjoyable. Ideally, you’d see proof of a positive culture on the organization’s website. Take a look at the current Royal Ambulance jobs page, and you’ll see multiple awards that rank the organization as one of the most inspiring workplaces in North America. That’s not to say that the absence of such awards is a red flag, but it’s absolutely a green flag if they do have them.

Do They Offer Professional Development?

Some EMT organizations take a traditional view of the employer-employee relationship and simply expect their EMTs to do the job they’ve been assigned, and nothing more. The best EMT employers are not like that. They not only offer professional development, but they also view it as a cornerstone of their success. They know that having a well-trained, motivated team of employees can make all the difference to the level of care that’s offered.

In some cases, you’ll even find EMT employers who provide career bridge programs that train their employees for the jobs they want in the future, even if it means they’ll leave the organization.

Do They Have Positive Reviews From Employees?

What the EMT organization says matters, but what its employees say matters even more. If an organization consistently receives positive reviews from its workers, then that’s a good sign that it’s an employer worth considering — and especially if the reviews come from past workers who have since left the organization. Their comments can provide insights into what it’s actually like to work for the employer.

There’s no way to guarantee that you’ll love working for an EMT employer, since a big chunk of your experience will also come down to your approach. However, if you keep the above questions in mind, then you should find that you increase your chances of success.
