Clothing that smells of smoke. I think that close to everyone has experienced that problem. Maybe you attended a bonfire. Maybe you were around people who were smoking. Maybe you spent some time in a cigar bar smoking top quality cigars…like those you can get online at Famous Smoke. However it happened, clothes that smell like smoke stink and sometimes that odor is not easily eliminated. Have no fear, I’ve found a number of ways that will show you how to get the smoke smell out of your clothing. No time like the present, let’s go.

Here’s How To Get The Smoke Smell Out of Your Clothing

Since us men will never give up smoking fine cigars, we should know how to get rid of that stale smoke smell that lingers on our clothing. As we all know, there are clothes you wash and there are clothes that are dry clean only. First, I’ll offer some help with washables.

For Clothes You Wash

Simply washing your clothing like you normally do will not always eliminate the smoke smell from your clothes. Sometimes you might need to take an extra step or two to get rid that smoke odor.

Fragrant Detergent

Certain laundry detergents have added fragrance. Some have quite a bit added. Depending on how bad your clothes stink of smoke, using one of these super fragrant detergents might be a solution.

Laundry Additives

These additives have an even stronger scent or fragrance that those super fragrant detergents I previously mentioned. Gain Fireworks is one. Downy Unstoppable is also a scent additive products to make your clothes smell good. These can help to get rid of smoky smelling clothes.

Use Vinegar

Vinegar is wonderful. It has so many truly helpful uses. One of which is smoke odor elimination. Use white vinegar as a pre-soak. Fill your basin, sink, or bucket with enough warm water to cover your clothes. Add 1 cup of vinegar and make sure it is mixed around. Add your clothes and let soak for 45 to 60 minutes. If you want, add peppermint oil or another pleasing oil fragrance to the mix before putting your clothes in to soak. The vinegar soak will get rid of the smoke smell and the fragrant oil makes your clothes smell good. Remember to launder your clothes normally after the vinegar soaking.

Lemon Juice is Helpful

Lemon Juice is something else that is always handy to have in stock at home. It has lots of uses including getting the smell of smoke out of your clothes. Unlike vinegar, no pre-soak is needed. Instead, try adding about a 1/2 cup directly to your wash.

Can I Get Rid of Smoke Odor Without Washing My Clothes?

If you have “dry clean only” clothes that reek from smoke, you might want to just take them to the dry cleaners and ask them to help you out. 

To round this out, here’s some tips to get rid of that smoky odor without having to wash your clothes.

Give Your Clothes Some Air

Give your clothes some fresh air! Hang your stuff outside. Fresh air and some sunshine can often be a big help. Preferably hang your clothes where and when a breeze is blowing. 

Odor Eliminating Products

Febreze is a great product or you can make your own odor eliminator by mixing vinegar, water, and some fragrant essential oils. First try airing out your clothes. If that is not enough, spray your clothes all over front, back, and under sleeves with either your homemade odor be gone spray or Febreze.

Craft Beer Cincinnati-The Tour Continues

Welcome, my friends, to the craft beer tour that never ends. It is time for craft beer Cincinnati style! I’ll get to this in a moment, but first, let’s recap.

First Stop-DTLV Craft Beers

I’m in the midst of zipping around parts of the country for the dreaded “w” word. I’m talking work. Last time I was in Las Vegas for magician work. So, for me, the “w” word is maybe not such a dreaded thing as I enjoy what I do. Plus, the travel puts me in many places and these places have interesting beers and breweries. Sometimes I have time to explore, sometimes I only have time to hit a local beer store for local brew.

While in Vegas, I found Banger Brewing on Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas. You can read about this Las Vegas Craft Brewer HERE.

I flew out of Vegas early Tuesday morning, got back to South Western Illinois, and drove to Cincinnati on Wednesday. That’s covering some territory. I had a lot of shit to do, so I could not check out any craft beer pubs or breweries. I did, however, grab a six-pack of some local Cincinnati craft beer.

Cincinnati’s March First Craft Beer

I spotted some sixers in a convenience store and felt like a porter (dark and frothy?) so I played grab bag and nabbed what I thought was an oddly named locally brewed porter beer with “March First” on the carton.

They have a beer van. Mobile Craft Beer!

To be honest, I had never heard of it and I sure as hell didn’t know where the name March First came from, what it meant, what it referenced or anything like that. I can’t even tell you why I ended up choosing it from all the others. But I did and I learned.

The name of the local Cincinnati brewer, March First, is a reflection of the pride that the founders of this brewery have for the founders of their state and for the state itself. The state of Ohio was founded March 1, 1803. They named their craft brewery to honor their state. I think that is both cool and respectful.

Baltic Porter…Cincinnati-Style

The beer I ended up with was their Baltic Porter. This very dark porter kind of confused me as I drank it. I mean it was really very dark. It had a serious head on it with respectable staying power. Coffee and chocolate flavors were prominent, no doubt. But there was also a sweetish nuttiness to it. None of this was the confusing part.

The confusion came because this deep, dark, rich looking and richly aromatic porter which left serious lacing on my glass did not taste like it should have tasted. Considering everything I just mentioned, I expected a heavy and hearty porter that I’d have to cut through with a hunting knife. Nope. No way.

March First’s Baltic Porter was, dare I say it, light. Yes, light. Not a bad light as just about any and every light beer ever bottled or canned tastes. But it was remarkably light. At first, I thought my tasted buds were all screwed up from jumping through too many time zones and altitudes. So, I drank more. Same thing.

Baltic Porter is a crazy super light on the palate and a little thin tasting, but not in a bad way, porter. I could knock back a whole six-pack and barely notice that I just drank a bunch of 5.9% ABV Cincinnati brewed and bottled porter craft beer. If I did drop all six down the hatch, you can expect that I had a Cheshire cat grin stretched across my face. If I did. Did I? I’ll leave that for you to figure out.

Craft Beer Tour Las Vegas

I am coming to you from Sin City! Let me tell you what, whatever you want in big boy fun you can find in Las Vegas. Or it can find you. My Craft Beer Tour HQ in Vegas

My headquarters for my Vegas trip has been a little hotel only a block or so away from Fremont Street. It’s called The Oasis at The Gold Spike. Nothing fancy. Nothing shitty. The location is just what I needed so I can check out the Fremont Street Experience action here in downtown Las Vegas anytime I want.

Even though I’ve been super busy with my magic work, I have squeezed in some craft beer drinking action. The casinos along Fremont have outdoor bars. Most offer craft beers. If no straight up genuine craft beers, then they have some of those “crafty beers”. Botton line, if you want craft-style beer in Downtown Las Vegas, you can get it easily around the clock. The outdoor bars don’t stay open 24/7, but you can simply walk inside the casinos anytime and order up a frothy adult beverage.

Drinking Craft Beers at Banger Brewing

I’m happy to report that there is a micro-brewery on Fremont Street! I asked around and my inquiries paid off. On the East End of Fremont, I found Banger Brewing. This is a sweet spot for a craft beer drinker like me. It is also a perfect launch point for my craft beer tour Vegas!

Banger Brewing has been in operation for about four years at 450 Fremont Street. Their goal is to make sure that Vegas has a solid place on the craft beer “map”. To put it simply, I’m a fan.

First off, the place looks good. There’s no mistaking it for anything other than a styling little brewery. It looks the part on the outside and on the inside. The five cats who came together to get this craft brewery going did their homework and it turned out right.

Banger Brewing is all about fresh. They use fresh ingredients to brew fresh craft beer. That’s the way it needs to be and that’s the way it is at this establishment.

The night I ventured in, Katelyn was behind the bar. She has a great smile and a super friendly attitude. It was only a few short moments before I had a fresh, delicious Banger Brewing IPA set down in front of me.

It’s the Hops, Baby!

Hop Culture Reference was what I had and they nailed it. It was delicious. Belma® hops from Washington’s Yakima Valley are highlighted in this aromatic, easy drinking craft brew. The fruitiness from the Belma® hops is apparent without making me feel like I’m drinking a fruit cocktail.

This 6.7% ABV IPA is an entry in Banger Brewing’s “single hop series”. Those Belma® hops are the only hops used in the brewing of this craft beer.

Banger offers a bunch of their own in-house brewed beers in addition to featuring quite a few craft beers from other craft breweries around the country.

All in all, if you want great craft beer in Las Vegas in a comfy spot with a chill vibe then do not miss Banger Brewing in Downtown Las Vegas. I’m happy with this stop on my craft beer tour.

Rickie Fowler’s Girlfriend

Californian born Allison Stokke is a pole vaulter who became famous in 2007 at the age of 17, when her pole vaulting photos went viral.

The photos got the attention of sports blog ‘With Leather’, who cater to a male audience, and from there the images went worldwide.

Stokke wasn’t entirely happy with her new found fame, telling The Washington Post: “It just all feels really demeaning. I worked so hard for pole vaulting and all this other stuff, and it’s almost like that doesn’t matter. Nobody sees that. Nobody really sees me.”

Allison has risen above all that now though and as well as being Rickie Fowler’s Girlfriend, she has found massive success as a sportswear model.  It has been an extremely tough transition for her, to cope with all the media publicity and being thrust into the spotlight for her looks and not her sporting prowess.

In fact, the video above isn’t strictly true as she never made it to the Olympics – despite intense training, the pressure was too much and she did not get the qualifying height she needed.

These days she can be found on Instagram by searching @allisonstokke, where she boasts a huge 347k followers.  Her twitter is @StokkeAllison, where she frequently uploads videos of her athletic adventures.

It’s testament to her strength of character that Allison has weathered the media storm that whipped up around her, through no fault of her own and embraced Rickie into her life as her new man.

You can often see Allison on the golf course supporting Rickie.

5 Tips to Trying Out for the School Band

The school band is ideal for students that have a passion for music. As a band member, you have a duty of entertaining guests during special events such as graduation ceremonies and sporting activities between schools. Although school bands replace their members regularly, joining them can be an uphill task. This is because they are very strict in their recruitment. They only pick the best performer during their auditions. Most students get rejected when they audition for the band simply because they didn’t bother to prepare. Below are tips that can give you an edge when looking to secure a slot in the high school band.

1. Get to Know the Band Director

Most bands give priority to the people in their circles. Your sure bet would therefore require you to know the band director because he is the person that is in charge of everything including the recruitment of new members. If the director is approachable, you should consider scheduling for a meeting with him so that you can inform him about your interest in joining his band.

If he is a reserved leader, you should opt to befriend a few of the band members so they can connect you with him. Besides that, you will have the advantage of being the first to know when the band schedules for auditions. As a matter of fact, most high school bands don’t publicize their auditions because they prefer to only inform those in their circles.

2. Show up During Practice Sessions

If you want know much about the band, you should be present whenever they are practicing. Being present will give you an opportunity to know the kind of music they perform and the instruments they use. You will also get to know the outfit they wear. When you show up most the time, you increase your chances of being picked in the forthcoming recruitments.

3. Buy the Instruments for Private Practice

Once you know the instruments that are commonly used by the band, you should make the effort of buying them. The best place to start when hunting for musical instrument is Soundchime.com.  You should then look for a private trainer so he can give you some lessons on how to play the instruments you have just bought. This is because the band can’t allow you to train alongside their experienced members. Training in private will give you the freedom to learn through mistakes.

4. Memorize the Band’s Music but Be Flexible

If you are aware about a forthcoming audition, you should practice even much harder to increase your chances of impressing the judges. You should ensure that you have memorized all the songs that the band performs a few days before the auditions day. On the material day, you should turn up for the recruitment with an open mind. This is because the judges might decide to test with something different from what you already know.

5. Stick to the Ethics

Even if you personally know the judges and the band director, you just have to give the audition a professional approach. Remember, it’s the maturity that you showcase during the audition that will be judged. Remember there is a difference between determination and desperation. Once you are through with the audition, it’s advisable you don’t hang around the auditions facility. In fact, you should go home right away. If the band is really interested in you, they will surely get in touch.

How to Make Rum Ham

At ThingsMenBuy, we all love delicious boozy meats, here’s one of our favorite recipes, How to Make Rum Ham.

This is great for a family gathering, special occasion or just because you feel like making it!

If you’re a barbeque afficionado, which I know many of you will be, you can add a smoked element to your Rum Ham to make it even more delicious.

How to Make Rum Ham

Rum Ham has become famous from seeing it on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, a debauched sitcom which has now been running for 12 seasons, on FX and FXX

To start us off on How to Make Rum Ham, here’s the best bits about the famous Rum Ham from the show:

Can you feel the pain as Frank notices the Rum Ham is no longer in the boat?  Makes you want to try it, right?

Ok let’s get down to How to Make Rum Ham.

How to Make Rum Ham Recipe #1

In essence, Rum Ham is injected with rum brine and coated with a rum glaze.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1.5 pound Ham
• Rum (one 750Ml bottle, or more)
• Brown Sugar (2 cups)
• Molasses (1/4 – 3/4 cup)
• Salt (1 cup)
• Water (2 cup)
• Dijon Mustard (1 table spoon)
• Butter (stick)

OPTIONAL EXTRAS:

• Peppercorn
• Cloves
• Bay leaf

Boil the Rum:

1. Pour 1/4 of the bottle of rum into a pot
2. Put on a lid and bring to boil for 3 to 4 minutes
3. Add a handful of cloves, peppercorn for taste

Mix the Brine:

1. Mix together ¼ a cup of salt and ½ a cup of brown sugar and add molasses
2. Pour the boiled rum into the mixture, add 2 cups of water and mix

Prepare the Ham:

1. Place the ham into a larger freezer bag
2. Pour the brine over the ham (completely cover it)
3. Inject the brine into the ham or make deep cuts so that the brine can soak into the ham
4. Put the ham into the fridge, ideally overnight.

Pre-Heat Oven:

1. Temperature: 325 – 350F, or 162 – 177C
2. Allow 10 minutes for oven to reach required temperature

Make the Crust:

1. Mix 1/2 cup of brown sugar and 1/4 cup of salt
2. Rub the mixture over the outside of the ham

Bake the Ham

1. Layer the baking dish with tinfoil and use a baking rack if you have one
2. Place the ham in the center of the oven
3. 1 pound of ham = 1 hour in the oven
4. Check the ham after 1 hour, ham is fully cooked once internal temperature is 140F or 60C

Make The Glaze:

1. Add rum to pot
2. Bring the rum to boil
3. Add stick of butter and 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
4. Mix together, for more solid texture add brown sugar too

Apply The Glaze:

1. Leave oven on and brush or spoon over the glaze, until the ham is covered
2. Place the ham back into center of the oven for 10 minutes

Save any leftover glaze to use as sauce for your delicious rum ham.

How to Make Rum Ham Recipe #2

Jamon Borracho (Drunken Ham) Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 (5 pound) bone-in fully-cooked ham
• 1/3 cup Dijon mustard
• 3/4 cup brown sugar
• 1 (15 ounce) can pineapple slices, undrained

• 10 whole cloves, or as needed
• 4 fluid ounces orange-flavored rum (such as Bacardi O®), divided
• 2 tablespoons cornstarch, or as needed
• 1 (15 ounce) can pineapple slices, undrained
• 1/4 cup of water

DIRECTIONS:

• Prep: 15 m             Cook: 2 h 5 m           Ready In: 2 h 30 m

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).
2. Place ham into a roasting pan. Spread Dijon mustard over top and sides of ham in an even coat; sprinkle ham with brown sugar. Press brown sugar onto ham with your hands. Place pineapple slices onto ham, securing them to the top and sides with cloves. Place any unused pineapple slices into bottom of roasting pan and pour pineapple juice and half the orange-flavored rum.
3. Bake in the preheated oven until ham is heated through and brown sugar has begun to glaze onto the meat, about 1 hour. Remove ham from oven and pour remaining 2 fluid ounces of orange rum over the ham; carefully light the rum on fire with a match. The flames will help the glaze to adhere to the meat.
4. Continue baking until an instant-read meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham, not touching bone, reads at least 140 degrees F (60 degrees C), about 1 more hour. Let ham rest for 10 minutes before serving. Transfer ham to a serving platter, leaving pan drippings in roasting pan.
5. Stir cornstarch and water together in a small bowl until smooth; whisk cornstarch into pan drippings. Place roasting pan over medium-low heat and whisk until pan juices thicken, about 5 minutes. Serve with ham.
